This is the first volume (out of a total of four) with the first three books, from the English translation by H. E. Butler of the work of the Latin writer Quintiliano, retired professor of rhetoric, born in Spain in the year 35 of the Christian era. Source: BUTLER, H.E. ed. Quintilian: Institutio Oratoria. We also reproduce Butler's Latin text, but present it continuously after the translation. There are several partial translations of this work In Portuguese, the first being that of Jerônimo Soares Barbosa: M. Fabio Quintiliano's Oratorical Institutions chosen from his XII books, translated into Portuguese, and illustrated with critical, historical, and rhetorical notes, for use of those  who learn: Volume I and II. Coimbra, in the 19th century. Our goal, however, is just to learn how to write in modern Latin, drawing from Roman writers vocabulary idiomatic expressions and syntax. There is a new five-volume edition of Quintilian from the same Loeb Classical Library entitled The Orator's Education, edited by Donald Russell, which replaces H. E. Butler's 100-year-old translation, providing a fully updated text and translation. Like Soares Barbosa, Russell also provides exceptionally rich explanatory notes that allow for a full appreciation of this central work in the history of rhetoric. But a simple student of modern Latin, studying alone,  only needs a good Latin text with its translation. First, he reads the translation and find out about its importance and validity for the collimated objective, then he immerses himself  in the Latin text. Butler's translation presented continuously, without being interrupted by excerpts in Latin, can be translated and readjusted to any other language. It is a translation that was also intended to be perfectly literary in the target language.

Fabio Quintiliano escolhidas dos seus XII livros, traduzidas em linguagem, e illustradas com notas criticas, históricas, e rhetoricas, para uso dos que aprendem: Tomo I e II. Coimbra, no século XIX. Nosso objetivo, porém,  é só aprender a escrever em latim moderno, haurindo nos escritores romanos vocabulário,  expressões,  idiotismos latinos  e sintaxe. Existe uma nova edição de Quintiliano  com cinco volumes da mesma Loeb Classical Library com o título The Orator's Education, editada por Donald Russell , que substitui a tradução de cem anos de H. E. Butler, fornecendo um texto e uma tradução totalmente atualizados .  Tal como Soares Barbosa, Russell também fornece notas explicativas excepcionalmente ricas, que permitem uma apreciação completa desta obra central na história da retórica. Mas  um mero estudante de latim moderno, estudando sozinho, só necessita de um bom texto latino qualquer com a respetiva tradução. Primeiramente, lê a tradução e inteira-se da sua importância e validade para o objetivo colimado, em seguida mergulha no texto latino. A tradução de Butler apresentada de forma contínua, sem ser interrompida por trechos em latim, poderá ser traduzida e reajustada para qualquer outro idioma. Trata-se de uma tradução que também visava ser perfeitamente literária no idioma de destino.
